About Donald Carlson

Donald F. Carlson went home to heaven on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Don was born on November 4, 1919, to second-generation Swedish immigrants in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Osceola High School in 1937. Don served in the Army Air Corps in World War II where he was trained as a glider pilot and would have been part of the Normandy Invasion had his program not been cancelled. He went on to be a Communications Officer in North Africa.

His professional career was spent working for the Hartford Insurance Group in Des Moines, Minneapolis, and Chicago working in sales, marketing, and management, and ending in the home office in Hartford, Don married Beverly J. Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa, on October 17, 1958.

0099Following retirement from the Hartford, Don was active in the Toastmasters International as a District Governor. He served on the organizational team for the 1982 Billy Graham Crusade in Hartford, was on the board of directors of Youth Challenge, a Hartford-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization, the African American Christian Mission, primarily serving in Kenya, and the Praise Jesus Worldwide Ministry. For years Don led monthly Bible studies in the local prison. Don was a long-time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hartford, where he served as president of the church body, chairman of the executive committee and the evangelism committee.

0103For 35 years he was active in the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship and served as a Field Representative in the Southern New England District and organized its annual convention for over a decade.

In the last four years of his life Don served faithfully as a member of Victory Church in Audubon, Pennsylvania. His primary ministry was to call first-time guests, and to call each church attendee by phone and pray, making hundreds of calls a year.

He never met a stranger and lived his life for the honor of Jesus Christ with great joy in spite of any challenges.
