To everything there is a season…

Monday, March 9th, 2009

In the clamor of the ongoing feud between Rush Limbaugh and the White House (not to mention the feud between Rush Limbaugh and his own party), and the uproar surrounding Gov. Sebelius’s nomination as HHS secretary, and all the other various political conflicts that dominate our attention, it is easy to forget the less-well-publicized battles being waged on the sidelines of American society—battles like the one being waged in Florida right now by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). They’re the folks, if you remember, who a few years ago forced Taco Bell and McDonald’s to agree to improved pay and working conditions for the laborers in Florida who pick their tomatoes.

Sadly the struggle for justice in Florida’s agricultural sector is far from over. It is still the case that a great number of the workers who labor in Florida’s fields, particularly in the Immokalee region, suffer from horrendous working conditions that often constitute outright slavery. Since 1997 more than a thousand people have been freed from involuntary servitude in Florida—that is to say, freed from egregiously abusive work environments in which they were prevented from escape by means of threatened and actual violence. They were the lucky ones. Slavery in Florida is not only alive but thriving. As Chief Assistant US Attorney Douglas Molloy put it, the Immokalee region in Florida is “ground zero for modern slavery.” You can read all about it (and sign a petition) at CIW’s website, or in Barry Estabrook’s very recent and very incisive articles in Gourmet Magazine.

The highly troubling cause of CIW’s current campaign is Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s inexplicable refusal to address the situation or discuss the facts with CIW, despite the fact that a broad and reputable coalition has called on him to do so. One only hopes that the CIW’s will succeed in pushing the state government out of its inaction. You can help by signing the organization’s petition here. It is important that we take notice. The vast majority of the tomatoes Americans eat in winter are picked by Florida laborers who quite likely are currently suffering under the systemic injustices in this industry. The Hebrew Scriptures tell us that there is a season for everything under heaven, a time to plant, and a time to uproot. Winter is not tomato season, and we need to be aware of the source of our out-of-season produce. In any case, it strikes me that, amidst the economic crises and continued political bickering which so easily capture our attention, it is vital that socially concerned Christians not forget these less-publicized struggles for justice. There are matters other than Rush’s latest pronouncement that deserve the attention of our minds and consciences.

HHS Round-Up and Fact Check

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Faith in Public Life’s blog is up with a great round-up of coverage and a fact check on some of the false memes in religion and politics coverage of Sebelius.  M25 has done a lot of new-media work on the Sebelius story… going forward – How can we, as a community, get better in driving the coverage.

Sebelius for HHS: The George Tiller False Attack in the MSM

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is President Obama’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services. Under her leadership in Kansas, abortions dropped by more than 10%. While pro-choice, she is personally opposed to abortion and has worked to reduce the number of abortions in the very red state where she, a pro-choice Democrat, was elected twice as governor.

Wendy Wright: Sebelius “a dangerous choice”

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Adding to the litany of smears and religious diatribe, Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America (CWA) has gone on record perpetuating the slanderous lie that Sebelius is radically pro-abortion.

Not only does she claim that Sebelius is a “dangerous choice” based on the (false) accusation that Sebelius has ties to George Tiller (Alan Boswell has debunked this false charge below) but she actually claims that abortions have  increased in Kansas under Sebelius’ term (which is also debunked below by Boswell).

I do not know where Wright gets her figures.  She cites no evidence to support her statements.  As far as I can tell, this is indicative of the utter lack of respect for people and, above all, facts by some who claim to be Christian!

Are we to presume that the pro-life movement cares nothing about the actual reduction of abortions and more about slandering those who are associated with Obama?

I guess so.

Sebelius at HHS

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Kathleen Sebelius is expected to be heading HHS soon. The official announcement will come out Monday. For culture warriors the director of HHS is probably the most important cabinet choice. Fortunately the administration has chosen a leader with a proven record of transcending the culture wars by coming to pragmatic solutions to some of our hardest issues (mind you, she is a Democrat from the home of creation-based education – Kansas).

Here are a number of points that should encourage religious progressives –

1) Sebelius is opposed to the death penalty (not really an HHS topic, though it shows where she is coming from)

2) Sebelius, as a former insurance commissioner, blocked the monopolazation of Kansas health care providers, preventing the state from going down the path of a singular private health care provider. This was a huge issue in Kansas for years, and by sticking to her guns Sebelius was able to save thousands from a potential loss in coverage.

3) Sebelius is pro-life. She is against the criminalization of women or doctors. She supports measures to care-for and respect women going through these decisions. She has long said that there are ways, beyond the “pro-life”/”pro-choice” debates to address the issue on the ground level that makes a real difference in women’s lives. During her tenure as Gov., the best I can tell, abortions dropped 17% in Kansas. She did this through four main means:

  • Expanding prenatal health care
  • Providing financial incentives for adoptions
  • Supporting pregnancy-support centers throughout the state
  • Protecting health care coverage, as a priority, through budget shortfalls

As it seems that universal heath-care coverage is going to be a cornerstone of the Obama Agenda this year, Sebelius is going to have a large role to play. She has demonstrated the ability to win in one of the reddest of states by moralizing health care coverage, by seeking common ground over contentious debates, and by seeking pragmatic solutions to meet Kansas’ health care needs. As the administration seeks to garnish support for their health care plan, which a lot of people think will be an uphill battle, I think she is by far the best candidate for building the needed bi-partisan coalition. She has done it on the state level. Now, she will be tasked with doing it for all of us. Unquestionably, Sebelius is the right face for the administration’s health care plans.
